Introduction
You already know this drink.
You have known it since childhood — the deep crimson in the glass, the tartness that makes you blink, the ginger heat that follows. Your aunty made it. Your mother made it. It appeared at every gathering that mattered.
Zobo was never a trend. It was Tuesday.
What we have done with this recipe is honour exactly that — and give it the ingredients it deserves. Celestial Glow, our Beauty and Youthfulness Tea, uses hibiscus as its foundation: the same flower, steeped with intention, alongside rose petals, moringa, and baobab. Cold-brewed overnight, sweetened with powdered dates, finished with fresh ginger and orange peel.
This is the drink you grew up with. Now it knows what it is.
Why Celestial Glow Works Here
Hibiscus is the heart of zobo. It is also the heart of Celestial Glow — bringing tartness, vibrant colour, and some of the highest antioxidant content of any plant in the range. When you cold-brew Celestial Glow rather than steep it hot, the flavour opens differently: softer, more floral, the rose petals and moringa coming through in a way that hot steeping muffles.
The baobab in the blend adds a subtle creaminess and a quiet tartness of its own. The green tea base brings a gentle depth. Together, they make a zobo that is richer, more layered, and more interesting than the version you grew up with — while being unmistakably the same drink.
Ingredients
Serves 4 to 6
4 Celestial Glow teabags (or 2 if making a lighter blend)
1 litre cold, filtered water
2 tablespoons powdered dates (or 4 fresh Medjool dates, pitted and blended)
1 thumb fresh ginger, peeled and thinly sliced
Peel of 1 orange, removed in strips
Juice of half a lime
Ice, to serve
Fresh hibiscus flowers or rose petals to garnish (optional)
Pinch of ground clove (optional — adds warmth and depth
Method
Step 1 — Cold brew overnight Place 4 Celestial Glow teabags into a large glass jug or pitcher. Add 1 litre of cold, filtered water. Cover and refrigerate for 8 to 12 hours, or overnight. Cold brewing extracts the flavour slowly — the result is smoother and less astringent than hot steeping.
Step 2 — Prepare the ginger and orange While the tea brews, combine the sliced ginger and orange peel in a small saucepan with 100ml of water. Bring to a gentle simmer for 5 minutes, then remove from heat and allow to cool completely. This creates a concentrated ginger-orange infusion that you will add to the punch.
Step 3 — Sweeten Add the powdered dates to the cold-brewed Celestial Glow. Stir well until fully dissolved. Taste and adjust — the sweetness should be present but not dominant. The tartness of the hibiscus is part of the experience.
Step 4 — Combine and finish Strain the cooled ginger and orange infusion into the jug. Add the lime juice. Stir. Taste again. Add the pinch of ground clove if using — it should be a whisper, not a statement.
Step 5 — Serve Pour over ice in a dark ceramic cup, a glass, or whatever vessel feels right. Garnish with a strip of orange peel or a few petals if you have them. This drink does not need to be dressed up. It is already beautiful.
Notes
On the cold brew: Do not rush this. Hot-steeping Celestial Glow and then chilling it will give you a stronger flavour. The overnight cold brew is what makes this recipe.
On sweetness: Powdered dates are the recommended sweetener because they align with the blend’s ingredients and add a subtle caramel depth. Honey also works. Avoid white sugar — it flattens the flavour.
On serving: This punch keeps in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. The flavour continues to develop.
On the garnish: A strip of fresh orange peel dragged around the rim of the glass before dropping it in is a small thing that makes the first sip noticeably different.
The Plant Behind the Punch
Hibiscus sabdariffa has been part of West African life for longer than any of us have been alive. What we call zobo, others call bissap, sobolo, or karkade — the same plant, celebrated across a continent in different languages.
It is rich in vitamin C, antioxidants, and compounds that support cardiovascular health. African communities knew this long before it appeared in a clinical study.
Celestial Glow carries hibiscus as its largest ingredient — 15 grams per blend — alongside moringa, baobab, and rose petals. Every cup, and every glass of this punch, carries that knowledge forward.
